5 Tips to Keep Your Home Cooler in Extreme Heat
With summer here and extremely hot temperatures in the forecast, now is the time to learn a few tricks to keeping your house cool. These timeless tips helped our ancestor’s in decades past and still apply today so let’s get right to it!
Block the Sun
Keep blinds closed, especially on south-facing windows. You can also use blackout curtains or drapes to block sunlight from entering your home.
Create Cross-Ventilation
If there is a nice breeze, and the inside temperature is even with or higher than the outside temperature, open windows and doors on opposite sides of your home to create a cross breeze. This will help to circulate cool air throughout your home.
Use Fans Strategically
Ceiling fans should be set to rotate counter-clockwise in the summer to push cool air down. Place box fans in windows to draw hot air out of your home.
Take Advantage of Cooler Nighttime Temperatures
Open your windows at night to let in cool air. Close them during the day to trap cool air inside for as long as possible.
Adjust Your Cooking Habits
Use your oven and stove less often to avoid heating up your home. Grill outdoors or use a crock pot, air fryer microwave or toaster oven instead.
Hopefully you found these tips helpful and they allow you to reduce your energy costs over the summer while still keeping your home cool and comfortable!
Bonus tip: Weatherstrip doors and windows and clean or replace your air conditioner filter – This will help to seal any gaps that may be letting in hot air and a dirty air conditioner filter can restrict airflow and make your air conditioner work less efficiently.
