Homemade Multipurpose Bread & Sweet Rolls
This recipe is great for sandwich bread, rolls, pizza dough and bagels with a few modifications on the amount of sugar used. We've included notes for each and a few extra steps if you're making bagels. Great for holidays, parties or just because you love bread products as much as we do!
Equipment
- 1 Food Processor or Mixer with dough blade optional
Ingredients
- 3 cups flour bread flour or all purpose flour
- 2 tbsp sugar* *See notes based on type of bread you desire
- 2 tbsp oil we use extra virgin olive oil
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast or one packet
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tbsp butter optional - softened for use after bread is baked
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients in a bowl until a rough dough is formed then kneed by hand until smooth (about 5 minutes) or put all the ingredients into a food processor with a dough blade on low for 2 ½ minutes
- Turn dough out onto working area, smooth into a ball and put into a greased bowl and cover to hold in moisture
- Allow to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size (Can be put in your oven with just the oven light on and the door closed)
- Punch down the dough and divide, shape and put into its appropriate pan
- Allow to rise in a warm place for an additional ½ hour (Can be put in your oven with just the oven light on and the door closed)
- Bake in a preheated 400-degree oven for 15- 20 minutes or until golden brown for a bread loaf, 10- 15 minutes for rolls or pizza dough. See special note for bagels.
- Brush butter on your finished bread crust if you want them to remain soft

Notes
NOTES:
- For pizza crust: use only 1 Tbsp sugar and skip the rising process (steps 3 & 5)
- For Bagels: after the initial rising, shape into bagels and boil in 1 gallon of water mixed with 1 Tbsp of baking soda for 2 minutes. Flip and boil a final 2 minutes then move onto step 6 in the above directions.
- For sweet bread: use ¼ cup of sugar / For extra sweet bread or dessert bread: use ½ cup sugar.
