Old Fashion Chocolate Fudge
This recipe comes from a Christmas tradition when I was growing up. I'm not sure how old the actual recipe is but I know it was being made in the 1950's by my mom. She would save the empty metal coffee cans and lids throughout the year and at Christmas cover them with wrapping paper, make a divider down the middle inside and fill them with fudge to give as gifts to family and friends. This continued for over 60 years. It is made with simple ingredients including mini marshmallows and will always remind me of the holidays growing up.
Equipment
- 1 Sauce Pan
- 1 mixing spoon
- 1 set measuring cups and spoon
- 1 8x8 pan
Ingredients
To Prepare Pan
- 1 tbsp butter to grease pan *see recipe notes
Fudge Ingredients
- 3 cups sugar
- 1 cup milk
- ¼ tsp salt
- 3 tbsp cocoa
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup mini marshmallows
Instructions
- Butter bottom and sides of 8x8 pan and set aside
- Mix sugar, salt and cocoa in sauce pan
- Add milk and cook, stirring constantly until it forms a soft ball when dropped in water
- Add butter, vanilla and marshmallows, remove from heat
- Beat with spoon until mix starts to crinkle at the sides of the pan
- Pour into buttered pan and put into a cold area or refrigerator until firmly set
- Score with a knife into desired size pieces
Notes
*If preferred, you can use parchment paper to line your pan instead of using butter. This does make removing the fudge from the pan an easier process.
